(7) Keitai Denwa (Cellular
phone) Services
Owning a cellular phone-or "Keitai denwa"-has
become very popular in Japan. Phones can be purchased
directly from service providers for a wide range of prices.
The service contracts can vary greatly in monthly fees,
covered regions, sign-up fees, as well as contract period
and other miscellaneous expenses. To have a cellular
phone, you need Certificate of Alien Registration.
(Your visa must be valid more than 90 days) and a document
on which your current address is written down (the original
of Certificate on Registered Matters).
* Please be aware that in addition to "Keitai denwa",
there is also a different type of mobile phone called a
PHS (Personal Handy-phone System). The main difference is
in the service areas. For example, the PHS can be used on
subways or in underground malls. The "Keitai denwa"
must be used mostly above ground, while it covers a wider
area throughout Japan.
