Clinical Examination
Should you feel sick, go immediately to a hospital which treats the symptoms
you are experiencing, with your health insurance certificate and some money.
Each hospital sets its own outpatient hours for the first visit, but they
are usually open on weekday mornings, and are closed on Sundays and National
holidays. Before visiting a hospital, check what departments the hospital
has, what day they are closed and what the consultation hours are.
In general, no appointments are required for the first visit, except for
dentistry. Most hospitals see patients on a first-come, first-served basis.
You may have a long wait at a large hospital. Sudden illnesses and emergencies
are handled by Emergency
Clinics on Sundays, holidays and after hours
At the Hospital
When you enter a hospital, present your health insurance
certificate at the reception desk. Tell the receptionist
the nature of your illness and the department you wish to
consult. The receptionist will give you instructions. After
you have been examined and received treatment, you must
pay your bill at the finance desk. Generally, the medicines
prescribed by doctors do not carry explanations on their
use, so carefully note the pharmacist's instructions. If
you do not speak Japanese, you may find it helpful to ask
a Japanese-speaking friend to accompany you to the doctor.
