Riding the Subway
Subway stations are automated. Buy your ticket at a ticket
machine, put it in the slot of the turnstile, and walk through,
retrieving your ticket as you go. When leaving the subway,
put your ticket in the slot in the turnstile and walk through
(your ticket is not retruned).
(1) Automatic Ticket Machines
All automatic ticket machines accept coins (10, 50, 100,
500 yen) and 1,000yen notes; some accept 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000
yen notes as well. These are five fares, set according to
the distance traveled. You can determine the fare for your
destination from the route maps that are visible above the
ticket machines. Place your coins into the slot and press
the illuminated button showing your fare. Your ticket and
your change will fall into the tray.
For English instructions, push the button marked "English
Guidance" (available only on certain machines).
(2) Automatic Turnstiles
You can pass any automatic turnstile with a green arrow
overhead. When passing through, place your ticket,
multiple-ride card, commuter pass, or one-day pass into
the slot of the turnstile on your right side. The
ticket passes through the machine and is ejected at the
other end of the machine. When passing through the
turnstile at your destination, place the ticket into the
slot again: it is collected by the machine. If your
fare is insufficient for the distance travelled, a buzzer
will sound and small doors will block your way. To
use a multiple-ride card, commuter pass, one-day pass or
pre-paid card issued by various companies, insert it into
the slot of the turnstile in the direction indicated by
the arrow on the card. Please note such card is at
the slot of the turnstile, and it is not collected like
a ticket.
(3) Fare Adjustment Machine
If your fare is insufficient for the distance travelled,
place your ticket, commuter pass or multiple-ride card into
the slot of the fare adjustment machine. It will indicate
the additional amount to be paid. Insert the amount indicated:
an adjusted-fare ticket will fall into the tray. You can
then exit through the turnstile using the adjusted-fare
ticket.
Also, some turnstiles accept a ticket and a commuter pass,
or a short-distanced commuter pass and pre-paid cards issued
by various companies to make up for the distance together
at a same time so that the machine calculates the fare automatically
for the passengers to go through the gate quicker. |
