I want to bring my child from abroad to Japan. What should I do?
If a foreign national currently residing in Japan under the status of residence of “Spouse of Japanese National” has a child who is not the biological child of their current Japanese spouse—a so-called “stepchild”—that child may be granted permission to reside in Japan under the status of “Long-Term Resident.”

I am an international student currently residing in Japan and would like to work part-time. What should I do?
Foreign nationals holding a valid visa (i.e. status of residence) must obtain prior permission to engage in “activities involving the operation of a business that generates income or activities for which remuneration is received” (i.e. employment activities) that fall outside the scope of their current status of residence. For example, part-time work by international students is permitted only when it is deemed not to interfere with their educational activities—the primary purpose of their stay (Article 19, Paragraph 2 of the Immigration Control Act).
- As a general rule, international students are permitted to work up to 28 hours per week; however, they are prohibited from engaging in any income- or remuneration-generating activities at adult entertainment establishments (i.e. brothels, etc.) or similar venues. Furthermore, permission to engage in activities outside the scope of one’s status of residence applies only while the student is enrolled in an educational institution.
